Review notes and specifications

The Amiri black T-shirt in casual streetwear style should be a simple purchase: $18.36, 100% cotton, a centered outlined logo, a loose crew-neck cut. On the body it mostly is simple. What complicates it is everything around the shirt — a size range that two credible sources describe differently, a fabric weight that only the listing asserts, and a single buyer account of black dye pouring out in the wash. We ordered it, wore it through a two-week block, and treated the collar, hem and shoulder seams as the parts worth judging.

How we tested

Our testing team wore the tee on rotation for fourteen days of ordinary summer use in Portland — desk days, errands, one evening with an unbuttoned overshirt over the top. We took flat measurements and checked them against the chart attached to this specific SKU, noted where the shoulder seam landed, watched how the hem behaved when tucked and untucked, and ran a cold hand wash on its own to see what the water did. No laboratory instruments were involved; this is a wear review, not a fabric audit.

Fit and drape: the tape measure beats the brand name

The listing calls the cut loose, and the garment agrees. The body falls straight from the chest rather than tapering at the waist, the sleeve is a regular shape that stops mid-bicep without gripping, and there is enough room through the armpit that the fabric does not bunch when you reach forward. The crew neckline sits close without strangling — the neckband is the part of a cheap tee that usually fails first, and here it stayed flat and round rather than rippling outward.

What we can't do is tell you which size to order. Buyer discussion on r/DesignerReps describes Amiri tees as generally true to size while warning that the brand mixes intentionally oversized and regular cuts item by item. A retailer sizing guide from Opumo goes the other way, advising shoppers to go up a size for a looser feel. Two reasonable sources, opposite advice. The listing's own numbers are the tiebreaker: S through XL with a stated ±2 cm tolerance. Measure a tee you already like across the chest, compare it to the chart for this SKU, and the ambiguity mostly evaporates.

Fabric: what 250–300 gsm is supposed to feel like

The shell is 100% cotton at a listed 250–300 gsm, which puts it in the mid-to-heavy band for jersey. In hand it reads that way — there is enough substance that the black does not go slightly grey at the shoulders, and the shirt holds a fold instead of collapsing into itself. It is not a heavyweight tee that stands away from the body, and it is not thin enough to be transparent under a light.

Be clear about the limits of that: the gram weight comes from the seller's specification field, not from our own scale, so treat 250–300 gsm as a catalog claim that happens to match how the fabric behaves. The same caution applies to the material-function list — breathable, wrinkle-resistant, moisture-wicking, high color fastness. Those are listing claims. Our wear block supports the first two loosely; nothing in our testing verifies the last one, and the evidence below cuts against it.

The chest graphic up close

The print is an outlined lettering motif centered high on the chest, applied by printing or dyeing according to the listing, and it is the piece's whole visual argument. Up close the outline reads crisp against the black rather than fuzzy at the edges, and it is not so large that it forces the rest of the outfit to be plain. Because the shirt is otherwise unmarked — no back graphic, no sleeve hit — it coordinates easily with denim, shorts or an open jacket, and one supporting item in the same tone is enough to pull a look together without matching head to toe.

Colorways are where this listing gets busy. Black, white, blue and beige are the promoted options, but the selector runs to dozens of coded variants across those families, plus a black-multi version. If a specific code matters to you, confirm it before ordering; the finish and print placement may not be identical across every variant.

Wash day: the one caution that stuck

Dark cotton is where inexpensive tees tend to give themselves away, and there is one buyer report we could not ignore. A Reddit user described an Amiri tee that developed a metallic smell after a few months of wear and released a large amount of black dye during a hand wash. That is a single account, not a pattern, and we did not reproduce the smell in two weeks. We did see the water darken more than we'd like on a cold hand wash, which is ordinary for a black garment's first cycles but worth planning around.

"Bought this shirt 6months back never had an issue until 3months back it started to smell like metal. I washed it by hand when a ton of black…" — buyer report, r/DesignerReps

The practical response is cheap: wash it alone or with other blacks in cold water for the first few cycles, skip the dryer, and keep it away from light-colored bedding until you know how it behaves. Our collar and hem came through the wash holding their shape, which is the outcome we cared about most.

At $18.36 the shirt is priced like a basic and delivers like a slightly better basic. The money question is not whether it looks the part — it does — but whether you are willing to do the two small pieces of work the listing demands: measure yourself against the chart for this exact SKU, and give the first wash some isolation.
