Review Methodology

Our testing team follows a consistent, multi-step process for every product we review. This ensures fair comparisons and reliable recommendations.

1. Product Selection

We choose products based on reader interest, market trends, and our own curiosity. We do not accept suggestions from manufacturers.

2. Purchase

We buy every product at retail price from authorized dealers. We do not use free samples.

3. Initial Inspection

We document packaging, included accessories, and build quality. We take photos and note any immediate concerns.

4. Field Testing

Each product is used in real-world conditions for at least two weeks. For example, backpacks are loaded and carried on hikes; knives are used for cutting tasks; EDC tools are carried daily.

5. Durability Testing

Where applicable, we perform controlled tests such as abrasion, water resistance, and drop tests. Our research editor designs these tests to be repeatable.

6. Scoring

We assign a score from 1 to 5 based on performance, build quality, value, and usability. Scores are explained in each review.

7. Retesting

A new version or material change prompts reassessment and, where needed, a repeat of the relevant tests. A retest date is added only when new testing has been completed; other changes receive an update date.

Records and comparison limits

Field notes identify the carried load, tasks and exposure conditions. Abrasion, water-resistance and drop results describe the procedure actually recorded rather than a universal durability guarantee.
