About Kakous
Kakous is an editorial review team based in Portland, Oregon. We were founded in 2019 by Marcus Hale, a veteran gear tester who wanted to create a resource for people who demand durable, reliable equipment. Our team orders and hands-on tests every product we feature. We do not accept free samples for review; we buy what we test.
Our small newsroom includes three full-time editors: Marcus Hale (Editor-in-Chief), Elena Vasquez (Reviews Editor), and Priya Nair (Research Editor). Together, we bring decades of experience in outdoor gear, everyday carry, and materials testing.
We focus on rugged everyday carry and outdoor gear—items that are built to last and perform in tough conditions. From tactical backpacks to survival knives, we put each product through a consistent testing protocol that includes field use, durability checks, and comparative analysis.
Our mission is to provide detailed reviews that help you decide what to buy. We earn commissions from affiliate links, but our ratings and recommendations are based on our hands-on testing.
Reading our coverage
Our gear comparisons follow the load, terrain and repeated tasks behind a durability judgment, so a pack or everyday-carry tool can be assessed for the conditions in which it will be used.
